Prayer to the Holy Spirit: Heavenly King

O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who art in all places and fillest all things; Treasury of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

The prayer to the Holy Spirit, “Heavenly King,” is a prayer that is as short as it is full of truth. This prayer is directed to the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity. In the first part of the prayer, the Holy Spirit is given several titles and succinct descriptions.

He is also called the Comforter because He literally comforts the soul and body of the believer. I have personally felt these comforts countless times, and I do not say this with pride, but to reinforce the fact that it is not a random title. Comforts can be described as shivers that run down the back, which generally appear when you are thinking about a spiritual problem or making a decision in agreement with God.

The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Truth, because once you receive Him, He guides you to all truth, which is that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Among all the teachings of the Holy Spirit and of Truth, there is also the fact that the Orthodox Church is the Church through whose teachings and ordinances man can be sanctified and can attain salvation.

Without the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world, in our lives, and in all that surrounds us, nothing makes sense, which is why He is also called the Giver of Life, Who fills everything and is everywhere. He is also called the Treasury of Goodness because from His treasury the virtues, the divine goodnesses, are given to us, without which we could not climb the ladder of spirituality.

Then follow two extremely important requests for us. The first of them is a direct invitation that we make to the Holy Spirit, namely that He enter our lives. Without this invitation, the Holy Spirit does not enter anyone's life, because God does not want to force anyone, our freedom being totally respected. The second request is that the Holy Spirit cleanse us from all stains, stains that consist of sinful passions and habits that we have acquired throughout our lives.

The prayer ends with the most important request, that the Holy Spirit save our souls, calling Him at the same time "Good", because only through His goodness can salvation be accomplished; we do not deserve it according to our sinful deeds. Amen.
