How to become an Orthodox Christian
The Orthodox Church is the direct successor to the early Church founded by Jesus Christ and the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From a historical perspective, it preserves the unaltered Christian tradition of the first millennium, being regarded as the Church that has remained unchanged for 2,000 years.
To become Orthodox, it is necessary to undergo a process of catechesis (learning the faith) and be baptized into the Orthodox Church (if you were not baptized a Christian) or to be received by chrismation. The steps include visiting a parish, talking to a priest, attending the Holy Mass, and adopting a Christian lifestyle.
Concrete steps to becoming Orthodox:
- Contact an Orthodox priest: Go to the nearest Orthodox church and talk to the priest about your desire to convert.
- Catechesis period: You will go through a period of learning Orthodox dogmas, traditions, and prayers, which can last from a few months to two years, depending on the parish.
- Attending the Holy Mass: It is essential to start attending Sunday services regularly to familiarize yourself with liturgical life.
- Baptism or Confirmation:
- If you are not baptized, you will be baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity.
- If you are already baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity (e.g., Catholic, Protestant), you will usually be received through the Sacrament of Confirmation.
- Profession of Faith: A public confession of the Orthodox faith (the Creed) will be made.
After being received into the Church, you will be encouraged to have an active life, participating in Confession and Communion.
