Why do we fast every Wednesday and Friday?

So, the Savior and the apostles fasted, but they did not count the days like the Pharisees. To their question, Christ nevertheless tells them that although "the children of the bridegroom have no reason to fast as long as the Bridegroom is with them, the days will come when the Bridegroom is taken from them, and in those days they will fast" (Luke 5:34-35). "Those" days, in which the Bridegroom was taken, are Wednesday, the day of the healing, and Friday, the day of the crucifixion. In the year 50, the apostles convened a council in Jerusalem, where they established fasting on these days for the believers.
